News Release
Barrios Announces Victory for
State Senator Jarrett Barrios announced a resounding victory for the City of Everett in the Supplemental Budget Bill released late last evening. This Supplemental Budget allows the City of Everett to enter into a long-term lease with the Allied Veterans Memorial Rink as well as securing reimbursements of almost two million dollars from the School Building Authority to the City of Everett. Last session, when approving the leasing of 10 rinks belonging to the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the legislature passed a requirement that any company bidding to lease the Allied Veteran’s Rink in Everett must also lease the condemned Cronin Rink in Revere. At the beginning of this legislative session, Senator Barrios filed a bill that would allow a public entity, such as the City of Everett, to lease the Allied rink without having to take responsibility for the Cronin rink. This legislation, however, would not be approved until Revere received assurances that the state would committee funds to rebuild the Cronin Rink. After working with the Everett and Revere delegations to secure funding from the State to rebuild the Cronin Rink, Senator Barrios has now been successful in passing language that allows the City of Everett to take out a long-term lease of the Allied Veteran’s Rink. In addition, Senator Barrios restored close to 2 million dollars in reimbursements from the School Building Authority (SBA) to the City of Everett for the construction of the new high school. The Supplemental Budget passed by the Senate in late 2005 included language, requested by the SBA, that would deny reimbursements to any city or town that had not spent at least 10% of any loan taken out for school construction projects within the first year of that loan. Due to last minute opposition of the high school project, the City of Everett was unable to begin work on the school in a timely manner and only spent a small portion of its intial $35 million loan. Senator Barrios worked with Everett officials in convincing the SBA not to include this penalty in the final budget. Therefore, the City of Everett will continue receiving a reimbursement level of 84% on the construction of the high school if the project remains on track. “This is another example of Senator Barrios working for the people of Everett,” stated Superintendent of Schools for the City of Everett, Fred Foresteire. “He continues to support better education, as well as fighting for the taxpayers of Everett.” Everett Common Councilman Stephen Smith said, “I am very happy with the work that Senator Barrios is doing and pleased to see the moneys returned to the City of Everett.” The bill was released late last evening by a conference committee comprised of House and Senate members. |
