News Release
June 15, 2006 Please Contact: Colin Durrant (617)722-1650 or Dalié Jiménez, 617-722-1650 BARRIOS ANNOUNCES $200,000 FOR CENTRAL SQUARE THEATER State Senator Jarrett Barrios announced today that the Central Square Theater in Cambridge received 200,000 dollars in the Supplemental Budget bill that was released this morning by a conference committee comprised of House and Senate members. “I am pleased to see the legislatures continued commitment to the arts,” stated Senator Barrios. “The arts are an integral part of this community and the building of this new theater will only add to the quality of life in Cambridge.” Central Square Theater is a community-based, professional theatrical arts center in the heart of Central Square, which collaborates with Underground Railway Theater, The Nora Theatre Company, the City of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Central Square Theater provides access to theater and theater education for under-served children, families and adults in Central Square, the City of Cambridge and Greater Boston while fueling economic development and aiding in the revitalization of Central Square. The 200,000 dollars would go to the building of a new theater which would be the new home of the Underground Railway Theater and Nora Theatre company. “We are thrilled with the news and thankful for the work of Senator Barrios and Rep. Walz,” said Executive Director for the Central Square Theater, Catherine Carr-Kelly. “The money will create a terrific cultural amenity for children, families and adults in Central Square, Cambridge, and Greater Boston.” The Supplemental Budget now goes to the Governor’s office.
