Senate passes an amendment honoring
the memory of Krystyl Poirier

State Senator Jarrett T. Barrios (D-Cambridge) today announced the passage of an amendment to the FY 2007  budget which renames a portion of the Route 16 Ramp, from Santili Circle to General Sweetzer Circle, in Everett to “Krystyl’s Way.”  This senate action honors Krystyl Poirier who tragically lost her life at the hands of an alleged drunk driver in Everett on Saturday, April 8, 2006.

“The passing of Krystyl was nothing short of a tragedy,” said Senator Barrios.   “The renaming of Route 16 will not only serve to keep Krystyl’s memory alive but also serve as a constant reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving.”

“On behalf of the entire Poirier family, we would like to thank everyone that made this possible in the loving memory of my sister Krystyl,” stated Joe Poirier.

Fellow Everett legislator, State Representative Edward G. Connolly said, “Krystyl deserves to be remembered and this will be a permanent testimony to her memory.”

The idea to rename the section of Route 16 originated in the Everett City Council.  The Council passed a resolution petitioning the State Legislature to rename the highway in memory of Krystyl.

“It is unfortunate that such an awful incident occurred but at the same time I am happy for the family that they can have a permanent memorial honoring Krysyl” said Everett Councilwoman Rosa DiFlorio.

The Senate approved its version of the FY 2007 budget yesterday.  A conference committee of House and Senate members will meet in early June to reconcile the differences between their two budgets. The final budget will then be voted on by both house and presented to the Governor for his signature sometime in June.
